COVID-19 Update May 28
Salem Total: 239 confirmed cases, 81 cases per 10,000 residents
Salem Today: 4 new cases; 70 active cases.
 
****** TODAY’S SPOTLIGHT ******
* Globally: 5,904,285 cases; 361,996 deaths
* US: 1,768,461 confirmed cases; 103,330 deaths.
* The number of positive cases in NH has been climbing. It averaged 3.25% from May 22-May 26. On May 25 and 26, positive test results were less than three percent of all tests. On May 27, it was 4.03%. Today it was almost 8%. It’s too early to say that this is a trend. Let’s hope it’s not.
* The number of hospitalizations is inching up. The average of current hospitalizations over the past week is 96; today it is up to 110.
* The number of deaths in NH related to COVID 19 has decreased from an average of 7 per day last week, to an average of 5 per day over the past week, including yesterday and today; NH has lost 9 people for each of the last two days.
* Haverhill MA and Manchester both just passed the 1,100 confirmed case mark; they essentially have the same number of cases. The difference? In Haverhill, 1 out of 58 people has been infected. In Manchester, it’s 1 out of 101.
* In Salem, 1 out of 124 people have been infected. In Rockingham County, it’s 1 out of 243. In NH, it’s 1 out of 310 people.
* NH DHHS said that we would be doing over 2,000 tests per day, but we have not hit the 2,000 goal for the past six days; the daily average for the past week is 1,241.
* The Boston Marathon has been canceled for the first time in its 124-year history because of the coronavirus pandemic,
* Governor Sununu is expected to make some major announcements tomorrow, but the Stay-at-Home Order will continue at least until mid-June. Watch on WMUR at 3:00.

* Total cases in Rockingham County: 1,277
* Percent of all cases from either Hillsborough County or Rockingham County: 81%

* Lives lost in Rockingham: 1 person over 60 years of age.
 
These are not simply numbers. We must not forget that these are all someone’s husband or wife, mother or father, sister or brother, son or daughter, friend or neighbor.

  • Last weekend, the race track defied the state’s stay-at-home orders and warnings from the New Hampshire attorney general and held a race with spectators. Now they have announced that the 2020 racing season has been postponed until further notice. Read more.

Governor’s Q&A on WMUR this evening:

  • Stay at home will stay in effect at least until mid-June. Staying at home, physical distancing, and masks keep the numbers down as we flex business opening.
  • Social gatherings are still limited to 10 or less, for now.
  • Emergency Order will be updated every three weeks for some time.
  • Datapoint for NH to fully reopen without restrictions? We are watching the percent of positive cases and beds used by COVID patients in hospitals. It will be a while before every restriction is fully lifted.
  • The DMV is now scheduling drivers’ licenses/road tests, with appointments for next week.
  • Why are masks not mandatory? We don’t have the accelerated numbers of COVID that other places have; the numbers are going down. Towns can do it if they want to.
  • Evictions started before COVID can still happen, based on the Court’s schedule. New eviction issues have not increased.
  • Assisted living facilities that are not Medicaid facilities will be able to share $30M in federal funds, but workers won’t get additional funding directly like those who work at Medicaid facilities
  • Remote learning next year? Not the first choice, if kids can be healthy and safe. Survey is open until 8:00 pm on Friday, May 29.
  • Indoor seating in restaurants? Let’s see what happens with outdoor seating. The next step will likely be 50% capacity.
  • Theaters? Problematic. One of the last things to open.
  • Announcements coming tomorrow: (Probably on WMUR, probably at 3:00). Camps, weddings, and other big events and houses of worship.
