3 more Salem residents have been infected with COVID-19.
In NH, 56 more people were diagnosed with COVID-19 today.
Salem School has reported that a student at Salem High school has tested positive with COVID-19. The school is doing a deep cleansing tonight, although the student hasn’t been in school since last Friday.
New infections include 15 kids under 18. There were three kids aged 0-9 and 22 kids aged 10-19.
Some of the biggest jumps today came from Manchester (10), Nashua and Durham (7 each), Windham (5), and Salem (3).
The positivity rate today was 4.56%. In Massachusetts, it jumped up to 6.48% today.
There were no new hospitalizations for patients with COVID-19.
An NH resident died in the 24-hour covered by this report. It was only the second COVID-associated death in NH in the past two weeks.
So far, neither Salem nor Windham are showing any school issues on the state’s COVID-19 school dashboard, even though reportedly 16 students from Windham are infected, and some Salem kids were at the same party believed to be responsible for the infections.
NHPR reported that Health Commissioner Lori Shibinette noted that the state’s COVID-19 school dashboard is not always exactly the data that the schools themselves may report. It is similar to the state’s reports, and individual nursing homes’ announcements. There is always a lag between the Division of Public Health reports, because the state does not add and disclose numbers until it completes its contact investigation.
The Governor has issued an executive order for ‘Lost Wages Assistance’ which has authorizes the state to participate in the “Lost Wages Supplemental Payment” program administered through FEMA. About 95% of those collecting unemployment benefits are eligible to receive additional funds, retroactive to Aug. 1.
Global new infections are 348,425, the highest since I’ve been recording this set of numbers in late May. The 2-week daily average is 266,017. Global deaths increased by 7,485; the 2-week daily average is 5,443.
US new infections and deaths have also increased. New cases are up by almost 4,000 more than the daily average for the last two weeks, although it is still lower than it was in early to mid-July. US deaths are higher than they have been for two weeks.

These are not simply numbers. We must not forget that these are all someone’s husband or wife, mother or father, sister or brother, son or daughter, friend or neighbor.

Hang on to your hat, friends, this may become a bumpy ride. We have had several days when things felt like they might have crept up, but things settled down the next day. However, with both NH and MA’s positivity rates going up, and the number of kids being infected, this doesn’t feel the same. NH has been lucky so far, and it would be nice if we could stay that way. We’ll know in the next few days if this is a short-time “thing” or if NH numbers are going to go back up. If they do stay up, hopefully, NH’s COVID numbers are a gentle wave and not a full tsunami. In the meantime, while we watch to see what happens next, stay safe, and always, be kind.
