The Golden Rule is also called the Law of Reciprocity. It is taken from Jesus’s Sermon on the Mount, as reported in Matthew 7:12 and Luke 6:31).
The Golden Rule boils down to three simple thoughts:
- One should treat others as one would like others to treat oneself
- One should not treat others in ways that one would not like to be treated
- What you wish upon others, you wish upon yourself
The theory is not limited to modern times. It is universal, found in Ancient Egypt, China, India, Greece, Persia, and Rome, many centuries before the birth of Christ. It is not limited to Christianity. The rule of being kind to others can be found in Judaism, Islam, Bahá’í Faith, Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, and even Wicca and Scientology.
Where have we as a civilization gone wrong? How is it that those who profess to be religious, Christians and other religions alike, have become so selfish and greedy. They have forgotten “What would Jesus do?” #WWJD
As we come into this holy season, let us not forget “So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them.”
Let us make the world KIND again … starting right here at home.
